Hissing cats are dangerous are they?

 Hissing 'Patch' is our black and white stray who has a lot of likeness with Tiggr in 'The Tenth Life' he is certainly aggressive hisses a lot but underneath is a soft touch. Why do cats hiss- just to frighten off an enemy and it largely works. Some say they are copying a snake who does the same before an attack but I think it more than likely something that has evolved with cats and is a sound they can physically make and is terrifying.
